Virtual Informational Sessions

Register Now

Skylight provides regular virtual group sessions that introduce Skylight and its specific features. The sessions allow staff to learn more about Skylight and meet members of the Skylight team.

Satellite Radar Imagery
2 min

In addition to real, or near real-time events, Skylight supplements these data with satellite imagery available for free to partners. The satellite imagery in Skylight is Synthetic Aperture Radar or Satellite Radar. In this video, we will teach you how to view satellite imagery in Skylight.

Watch Video
Alert Creation and Management
3 min

Skylight focus on events helps to distill the vast amount of information provided by AIS and other data, and sometimes a timely alert can help analysts respond most effectively. In this video, we'll teach you how to create alerts in Skylight.

Watch Video
Managing Areas of Interest
3 min

In this video, we will teach you about interacting and managing your areas of interest. Areas of interest are required to generate certain events, create alerts, as well as view historical satellite imagery and request new satellite imagery.

Watch Video
Fishing Events
3 min

In this video, we'll teach you about Fishing Events in the Skylight. These events are generated by a machine learning model. This model was trained on numerous track examples of fishing behavior provided by subject matter experts.

Watch Video
Speed Range Events
4 min

In this video, we will teach you about Speed Range Events in Skylight. This event is a real-time AIS-based detection of a vessel traveling at certain speed in an Area of Interest.

Watch Video
Entry Events
2 min

In this video will teach you about Entry Events in Skylight. This event is real-time AIS-based detection of a vessel entering an Area of Interest (AOI).To begin monitoring a certain area with Entry Events, you must understand how to create an Area of Interest or AOI. If you have not yet created an Area of Interest or AOI, see our video on how to create one.

Watch Video
Creating Areas of Interest (AOI)
4 min

In this video, we will teach you how to create an area of interest in Skylight. An "Area of Interest" or AOI, enables certain types of events in Skylight. This includes Skylight's Entry Events and Speed Range Events. AOIs are required to create email alerts for any type of events as well as recording and downloading data seen on the map for briefings or reports.

Watch Video
Dark Rendezvous Events
4 min

In this video we will teach you about Dark Rendezvous Events in Skylight. This event is when a single vessel transmitting AIS displays tracks resembling potential at-sea transshipment.

Watch Video
Standard Rendezvous
4 min

In this video, we will teach you about Standard Rendezvous events in Skylight. This event is when two AIS-transmitting vessels have come within a short distance of each other, which is helpful for analyzing potential at-sea transshipment events.

What is Skylight?

Skylight is a software solution that empowers the visualization and analysis of vessel behaviors, bolstering awareness and providing actionable intelligence crucial for protecting our ocean.

How does Skylight work?

Skylight’s platform applies advanced AI on big data to identify and highlight anomalous vessel activities. Rather than analyzing every vessel and track, our focus is on surfacing interesting behaviors, which we refer to as Events. This allows analysts to direct their attention to the most critical activities within their domain.

How much does using Skylight cost?

Skylight is available at no cost to government, regional, and non-governmental organizations worldwide. The program was made possible through the philanthropic vision of its founder, the late Paul G. Allen, who believed in leveraging technology to protect our ocean. Today, Skylight is supported by the Allen Institute for AI (AI2), a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing AI for the common good. By providing Skylight free of charge, the program aims to democratize access to essential tools for combating illegal fishing and safeguarding marine ecosystems for future generations.

How can users get access to the Skylight platform?

Skylight offers two accessible ways to use its platform. Firstly, users can access it through a web-based application, which can be reached by any account with internet access. Secondly, Skylight provides access via an Application Programming Interface (API), facilitating integration with other maritime domain awareness tools such as SeaVision, YARIS, IORIS, and others. To start a collaboration together, get in touch with our team at Support@skylight.global.

What data sources does Skylight utilize to provide insights into vessel behavior?

Skylight utilizes a combination of data sources to provide insights into vessel behavior. This includes free data sources such as Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and Night Lights, along with partnerships with commercial entities like Maxar and Spire. This diverse mix of data enables Skylight to offer valuable insights into vessel behavior.

What types of vessel behaviors does Skylight track?

Skylight tracks various vessel behaviors including standard rendezvous, dark rendezvous, fishing activities, speed range violations, and entry into defined areas. Our AI sifts through vast data to identify and highlight these behaviors.
